what's nearby our future new site
We found such success at our pilot project, and a large number of our visitors were there because they were in the area to shop, and they decided to drop in. In the future we still plan on being at a location where you can combine your trip to the Museum with a visit to one of our popular area attractions and enjoy a meal out with the family. Stroll historic downtowns lined with friendly boutiques, delightful eateries and antique shops. For other learning opportunities, visit inviting museums and train depots. Here are ideas to help plan your trip.
Centralia Factory Outlets - Shop Centralia Factory Outlets for the best prices on your favorite brand name items from stores including Carter’s, Gymboree, Nike, Gap, Eddie Bauer and Children’s Place.
Chehalis-Centralia Steam Train - A kid’s favorite! Enjoy a fun-filled and memorable journey on a 1916 steam-powered locomotive. This scenic trip winds through the scenic upper Chehalis River Valley, crossing over several wooden trestles and passing many historic farms.
Historical Downtown Centralia - The historic downtown district offers an ambience of old-fashioned light poles and brick buildings, quaint shops and antique stores and endearing eateries.
Historic Downtown Chehalis - Stroll the streets of historic downtown where historic buildings are reborn with charming boutiques and inviting eateries.
Lewis County Historical Museum - Located in the historic 1912 Northern Pacific Railway depot, explore exhibits reflecting the area’s logging and rail history as well as enjoying the children’s hands-on area.

Recreation Park & Penny Playground - This 12-acre park features the community outdoor swimming pool and kiddy spray park, picnic areas, covered shelters, and expansive and popular Penny Playground.

answers to your questions
The Pilot Museum project was only intended to be open for six months. We learned quickly that we were doing much better than we forecasted, and knew that it would not be a problem staying open longer. We were also advised that additional data would help when applying for grants. So our six month pilot museum was kept open for an additional five months.
During that time we found what things worked and what things we would have to change. We also knew that we would have to stick with our plan and close down so we could put all our efforts towards opening a permanent facility. There are a lot of things that we will have to arrange, design, create, and raise funds for. So we will need all hands on deck to pursue getting them done.
From our data we found out that we needed to have our museum location in an area with great visibility, high traffic, ample parking, and an outdoor area. We also found that it was crucial to remain a partner to schools, by including space for early child hood development and continuing to provide exhibits that promote educational growth in our visitors.
We have just received approval by the city of Chehalis to develop between Home Depot and Walmart, near the round about. We are very excited since this fills the needs that we found to be critical to being a success!
We know it will be crucial to our success to still host field trips, play groups, birthday parties, and events. So we plan to still have services and space available for these occasions. We learned a lot during the pilot project, and know of some fun changes we can apply to make the experience even more enjoyable for our customers! So please count us in when planning some of your most memorable days in the future!
During our pilot project, we are targeting children between birth and ten years old. However, all ages are welcome. We want families to learn by playing together. Basically, you can be two, fifteen, thirty, sixty-two, or even more than one hundred years old and we wouldn't turn you away. We want the whole community to come in with their children and learn by playing together!
There are many ways to help us out at the museum. We need people for looking after the exhibits, as well as helping at the counter. We believe volunteers are vital in supporting us. While having direct contact with children and families, our volunteers have the unique opportunity to help members in our community learn and grow. If you are interested in helping us out, there are a couple of forms that will need to be filled out. Please click here for the forms. They will need to be printed and mailed to Discover! Children's Museum PO Box 147 Chehalis, WA 98532, or dropped off at our museum. We look forward to having a partnership with you.
